World Suicide Prevention Day 2026: Reasons to Stay — A Conversation We Need to Keep Having.
Behind every statistic is a person. This Suicide Prevention Month, we're talking about something we don't discuss enough, the reasons we stay.
Every September, we are reminded to talk about suicide prevention. September 10th marks World Suicide Prevention Day, and while it is important that we have these conversations, I sometimes wonder what happens after the hashtags fade and the day passes, because life doesn't stop being difficult on September 11th. People are still struggling, still hurting, still trying to make sense of things that may be difficult to put into words, and sometimes, you really can't tell who is carrying something heavy. It could be the friend who is always making everyone laugh, the colleague who never misses a deadline, the student who seems to be doing just fine, the person sitting next to you in a matatu. We often don't know what someone is carrying. So this year, at Mindful Clarity with Ness, I wanted to have a slightly different conversation. Not just about suicide, but about life.About the little things that keep us here.
What is your reason to stay?
So much of the conversation around mental health focuses on crisis, warning signs, risk factors, and what to do in an emergency, but it's only half the story. The other half is just as important: what keeps us here? What are the small, ordinary, sometimes unexpected things that anchor us on the hard days?.
1) A song that gets you through a bad morning. 2) A friend who checks in without being asked. 3) An unfinished goal you're not ready to let go of. 4) A pet waiting for you at home. 5) Your best friend's ridiculous voice notes. 6) Your child running towards you when you get home. 7) Your morning cup of chai or coffee. 8) A book you haven't finished. These things sound small until you realize how much weight they quietly carry. That's the spirit behind this conversation: a space for our community, here in Kenya, to name what keeps them going and, in doing so, remind someone else that they're not alone in needing a reason some days.
Let's Talk About Ours
This September, I'm inviting you to join us in a simple conversation: What is your reason to stay? You can share a person, a place, a dream, a memory, a little joy, or even something that makes you laugh. There is no perfect answer, and if your reason feels small, share it anyway, because you never know who might read your words on a difficult day and think, “Maybe I have one too.” Use #ReasonsToStayKE and let's create a collection of the things that remind us that life is still worth holding onto, and while you're thinking about your own reason, think about someone else too. Send that message, make that call; Ask, “How are you, really?” Sometimes we don't need to have the perfect words. Sometimes simply showing someone that they matter is enough to open a door.
And If Today Feels Heavy
If you're reading this on a day when staying feels harder than usual, I want to tell you something you may not have heard enough; You don't have to make a decision about your whole life on your hardest day,you don't have to know what the next year will look like, you don't even have to know what next week will look like. For today, make your world smaller.Get through the next hour, have something to eat, take a shower, sit somewhere you feel safe, put on the song you know by heart, watch something that makes you laugh, stay around people, even if you don't feel like talking and if the thoughts are becoming difficult to manage, tell someone plainly: “I'm having a really hard time right now. I need you to stay with me.” You don't need to explain everything.Just get through this moment. There will be time to figure out the rest, and if you need professional support, Mindful Clarity with Ness is here to help you find your way through it.You don't have to solve your life today.Today is enough.
Perhaps suicide prevention isn't only about knowing what to say when someone is in crisis, perhaps it is also about creating communities where people feel safe enough to say, “I'm not okay,” and know that someone will listen. So this September, let's check in on each other.Let's share the little things that keep us going.Let's give each other reasons to smile, reasons to hope, and sometimes, simply a reason to get through today.
